‘Social Media,’ is today so much more than the buzz word it was only a few years ago. It is now an integral part of the lives of literally millions of people all over the world. Globally, people are using social media recreationally, to make business contacts, find new friends and keep in touch with older friends. But of the social media sites out there, which are the biggest?
Without doubt, the absolute biggest is Facebook. As of July 2010 it had over 500 million registered users globally. Facebook is comparable to an electronic year book. Users register and set up their profiles with information about themselves and photographs. They can then find their friends and contact people either privately by private message or publicly through writing on their contacts’ ‘walls’. Users upload photographs and can even compete in various flash games with one another.
Arguably, Facebook was the site that brought social media to the forefront of the Internet, attracting users who had previously not even spent much time online! There has been a controversy recently, however, with regards to the privacy policy.
The next site we will feature is Twitter. This is referred to as a ‘micro-blogging’ platform, where registered users can make incredibly short blog posts of sorts, of just 140 characters or less. At the present time (July 2010) the site has more than 100 million registered users globally. There is some dispute, however, as to just who many of these users are active, given the fact that there are a lot of dormant accounts. There are also a number of ‘Tweet Bots,’ which are essentially automated accounts as opposed to being human-managed. However, both casual users and businesses alike are taking advantage of the site in their millions. It’s also a popular networking tool and is even frequently used as a communications tool for celebrities looking to share news with fans.
The sites we’ve mentioned here are just two of literally hundreds out there. These are, though, absolutely the most talked about right now. Even if you are not a regular user yourself you are likely still to have heard of them. The Internet is also still growing massively and there are evermore homes getting online, making it a fair assumption that social media will continue to grow.
